This training center for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 595 and National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) is recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy as the first commercial retrofit building in the country to receive the Zero Net Energy designation. Installation of operable windows along with natural ventilation to heat and cool the building were incorporated. Rooms have sensors to balance the use of natural climate control with the need for air conditioning or heat. The roof was refurbished and painted in a light color to absorb less heat. With the intent to be a working laboratory for journeymen and electricians, the result is “a game changer” for the union electrical industry; an exemplary example to show trainees how zero net energy works.
